The Three R's: Reducing the Impact of SF6 Gas

by Billy Lao

Abstract: Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) Gas is used as an electrical insulator and arc suppressant in high and medium voltage electrical equipment in the electrical power utility and industrial power industries. SF6 is also used in medical devices, metal production and other manufacturing applications. The same properties that make SF6 useful as a dielectric create environmental problems. SF6 is a major greenhouse gas with a GWP of 23,900; however, with proper training and equipment, SF6 can be used in a closed loop cycle where it is not emitted into the atmosphere. Utilizing the three Rs: Recover, Recycle, and Re-use, along with best gas handling practices the T&D industry can enjoy the benefits that SF6 provides while minimizing environmental impacts.

Choose to Reuse: Environmental Benefits of Reconditioned SF6 Gas

by Danielle White

Abstract: When it comes to medium and high voltage circuit breakers, there is no better electrical insulator than sulfur hexafluoride (SF6 ). The manufactured gas is most commonly used to fill circuit breakers within utility substations to prevent and quench arcing events. Unfortunately, SF6 is also a potent greenhouse gas. This article discusses how users can reduce the environmental impact of SF6 by choosing to re-use and investing in training and proper emission-free equipment.

SF6: THE Alternative Gas

by Danielle White and Lina Encinias

Abstract: With the ever-growing challenges of federal & local reporting and SF6 emission reduction, several alternatives have been presented to the industry in replacement of SF6 gas. As the industry continues to review and consider alternatives, we should not limit our solutions. SF6 continues to be the best alternative to medium and high voltage electrical insulation and arc quenching gas in GIE. Turning to the existing stockpile of SF6 gas offers an environmentally friendly alternative solution to importing virgin SF6 gas from overseas. The implementation of reconditioned SF6, which has been properly treated to meet or surpass IEEE/CIGRE standards, helps to reduce the carbon footprint and eliminates SF6 emissions that are the direct result of the manufacturing process. Awareness and preventative measures will allow our industry to continue using this insulating medium safely, provided the benefits of reuse are shared and understood.
